Christmas at Nest Brisbane

Location: 159 Roma Street

Meal: Dinner (from 2 pm)

Cost: 2 course – $45 per person

3 course – $55 per person

Nest Brisbane’s Michelin rated chef, Kenneth Burton has created a Christmas menu with a twist. Its a take on your classic Christmas dishes entwined with an influence of the East. A fuss free Christmas is the way to go, sparing up time for what’s really important, family and friends. I was lucky enough to sample the Christmas menu on offer before hand and I will give you my assurance that it was perfection!

ENTREE

Moreton Bay bug, mango, avocado and a coriander tian, fresh chilli, micro salad. This dish is my description of a Queensland Christmas. Fresh, light and delicious. Prawn and mango work an absolute treat together. A perfect sized entree that will be the talk of the table.

MAIN

No Christmas dinner is complete without Ham or Turkey. A combination of the two, is what makes the main so exciting. Every bite left me wanting more. Turkey, pistachio, chestnut and rooftop honey glazed ham crusted roulade with five spiced pumpkin mash, wok fried tamarind greens and beetroot essence. Nothing short of perfection; all the flavours of a traditional Christmas dinner entwined together to create a marvellous feast.

DESSERT

If you have a sweet tooth then I know you will love dessert. For me personally, I found the dessert way to sweet, but that’s just me. I have never been a fan of Christmas puddings. I would prefer a simple fruit platter to finish my meal. But it is Christmas and tis the season to indulge. Warm plum pudding served with cinnamon ice cream, brandy anglaise plus a summer berry and Thai basil salsa.

Pappa Rich Brisbane

Location: Wintergarden Brisbane CBD

Meal: Lunch/ Dinner

Overall Experience: 7.5/10

Food: 7/10

Service: 8/10

Papa Rich has opened their doors at Wintergarden Mall and has taken off with a bang. With queues out the front, the family oriented, Malaysian Restaurant, offers fragrant, wholesome dishes, right in the heart of the CBD.

Here are some of the dishes on the menu that we tried out:

ROTI CANAI WITH TANDOORI CHICKEN

Coming from an ethnic background,Tandoori Chicken is something we eat at home at least once a week. The wait time on this dish is 15 minutes longer than most dishes at Papa Rich as it is made from scratch. The chicken itself could have been marinated for a bit longer as the flavours were lacking. The Roti was absolutely perfect. Buttery, and crispy ahh! I love roti canai and theirs would definitely rate high up on my list.

DRY CURRY EGG NOODLES WITH CURRY CHICKEN

This dish was absolutely amazing. The egg noodles made the dish a healthy, light option against the full flavoured curry. The serving was all very generous.

PAPPA DEEP FRIED CHICKEN SKIN

To break up our meal, we ordered the deep fried chicken skin, which were heavenly. They were so addictive, I could not stop eating them. These were the real deal, crispy chicken that had a delicious flavour to it. I think they would work really well with a cold beverage.

Burrito Bar | Rosalie

Location: Rosalie

Meal: Dinner/ Lunch

Price: $2 to $50

Overall Experience: 7/10

Food: 6/10

Service: 8/10

The Burrito Bar has recently renovated their store in Rosalie Village. We have previously tried a few other stores, but were not impressed with the quality of food and service. So naturally at first, we were a bit hesitant to check out the  Rosalie Store. I must say, we were pleasantly surprised; the place looked amazing and they definitely redeemed themselves in our books.

Here are the options we tried out from the menu:

QUESADILLAS

Delicious, 12 hour slow cooked pulled pork quesadillas with lots and lots of cheese. Melted cheese is always a good idea. The pulled pork was equally delicious and whole in flavour. This is definitely an option that I will be ordering in the future.

BBQ WINGS

Okay so I am going to be 100% honest here. I have previously had the wings from Burrito Bar and was extremely disappointed (mind you I ordered the Chipotle ones). My previous experience delivered wings that were starved of meat and terrible chipotle flavouring. The Bbq Wings had a pleasant flavour and were definitely a step up, however, I did find that the actual wings themselves needed more meat on them.

BBQ RIBS

I am a huge sucker for ribs, so naturally I was going to order them over a burrito or nachos. They were served up with delicious, cheesy Mexi Fries…yum! The flavour of the ribs was amazing and they were pleasant to eat. However, the meat was not as juicy as I would have liked it to be.

CHOCOLATE NACHOS

One of my favourite desserts of all time. Chocolatey nachos with a serving of ice cream and warm chocolate sauce. Need I say more? I love the crunchiness of this dessert, which left me wanting more.

Avocado On Toast | Brisbane’s top 5

Avocado on toast is a personal favourite. Light and refreshing but substantial enough to keep you full. I have gone  out in search for 5 of the best avo on toast offerings in Brisbane.

Buzz Bistro Emporium

buzzPicture perfect avocado on toast from Buzz Bistro, served with feta. The toast was perfect, yes, for me this is a big thing! There is nothing worst than having hard toast you cannot cut through. Buzz delivered a lightly toasted bread with perfectly soft avo that worked really well with the combination of herb marinated feta.  Simple but delicious.

Laruche Kiosk at My Bakery Lane

bakery_laneThis flavoursome avo on toast left me in awe. Perfectly soft avocado with feta and hints of spice, ah the perfect breakfast on a Winter morning. The only thing that let down this amazing breakfast was the terrible service.

Little Sista Cafe

littlesista1Of course, our favourite breakfast spot would make it onto this list. Served with almonds and chilli jam this one is a definite winner.

Sol Breads

sol_breadsHealthy and delicious. This breakfast was amazing combined with haloumi which I absolutely love. Once again, the toast was easy to cut through and the avocado was well seasoned. The serving portions at Sol Bread are very generous.

Little Clive Cafe

Little Clive presented me with a spectacular plate Avo on toast; brought to life with the flavours of dukkah and chilli! Yum!

Lunch with a view | Blackbird Bar & Grill

Location: Eagle Street, Brisbane CBD

Meal: Lunch

Price: $10 – $40

Overall Experience: 10/10

Food: 10/10

Service: 10/10

Nothing beats a lovely, warm Winters day overlooking the Brisbane River, spending some alone time and indulging on exquisite food. Blackbird Bar & Grill recently launched their new lunch menu which is packed with flavour. I ordered the Steak Frites and  a Watercress salad, just enough for one.

The Steak Frites was one of the most amazing dishes I have had in a while. The flavours were perfect for a Winters day, buttery and spicy, wholesome goodness. The Shoestring Fries as a side worked a treat at bringing some crunch into the meal. Quite surprising that my amazing main only set me back $24.

The Watercress Salad was lovely and fresh, with pear and walnuts. The combination works a treat offset with blue cheese dressing. Seeing as I was having a lovely day to myself, I made sure I ordered a sneaky wine too. I honestly cannot wait to go back!

The best Yiros in town | The Yiros Shop

Location: James St, Fortitude Valley

Meal: Lunch/Dinner

Pricing: $5-$20

Food: 10/10

Service: 10/10

Formerly known as Gyradiko, The Yiros Shop is one of our favourite Greek food places. With all meals under $15, we could not pass up on ordering both a chicken and pork yiros. To add into the mix, we also ordered the fries with feta and seasoning. One word, heaven. Truly a dish of the Greek Gods. The Yiros themselves, were full of flavour and the extra chips really packed a punch.

I must say, this is one of the few meals in Brisbane that would be happy to eat every single day; it is the kind of food I dream off. Thankfully they have now opened up their second store in Cannon Hill.

McDonald’s | Create Your Taste

Location: Australia

Meal: Lunch/Dinner

Pricing: $2 – $25

Food: 8/10

Service: 5/10

As of the 1st of June 2015, McDonald’s Australia rolled out their new ‘Create Your Taste’ concept in all stores. Customers get the opportunity to create their own gourmet meal, which unlike their traditional meals, is served up on a wooden platter. The first time I got to try out this new concept was at the McDonald’s launch, so naturally all aspects of the service were outstanding and polished up for us bloggers.

I paid them a visit a few weeks ago to see how this concept has been working for them, and to say the least, I was far from satisfied. I will admit, the burgers are probably some of the best I have had, but the service offering, did not quite work for me. The wait on food was a lot longer than expected, and our meals had been mixed up. For me personally, the reason I go to a fast food place is to get my meal quickly without having to wait.

In the Brisbane Food scene, with so many burger places opening up over night; if I wanted a gourmet burger I would opt for Chur Burger or Miel Container. But the reason I love McDonald’s is cos they give me my food quickly and oh, that greasy goodness!

What are your thoughts on the new Create Your Taste concept?

Jan Powers Farmers Markets | Top Picks

jan powersIMG_20150620_144949IMG_20150620_135556IMG_20150620_144853

If you had $100 to spend at the Jan Powers Markets, how would you spend it? Brisbane Food Lovers took on the challenge to find the best produce at the markets and here are our top picks:

  • Smoked Salmon

If you haven’t tried the smoked salmon from the Jan Powers Markets, you are really missing out on something spectacular. Made fresh whilst you wait, choose from a herb crust salmon or if you like your food spicy, opt for the red hot chilli pepper. Priced from $7 to $25 the smoked salmon is our favourite. I had to get 3 of these babies (just had to).

  • Traditional Wood-Smoked Chorizo

Okay, another favourite, that you have to try. The Chorizo and smoked meat selection. I picked up a few of the hot smoked  chorizo and God Father salami. Both work a treat on toast with avocado. The chorizo was $15 for 3.

  • Fresh Juices

By now you have all probably seen pictures on social media of the amazing juices topped with fresh fruit. Yes, well they taste equally as amazing as they look not to mention they are really good for you. I opted for a berry & mango smoothie.

  • Cheese Sticks

A table full of cheese sticks is the kind of magic I see in my dreams, oh, and at the Jan Powers markets too. They are amazing! Ideal for curbing your hunger whilst you stroll through the markets.

  • Fresh Fruit & Veg

Naturally if you are going to go to the markets, one cannot simply leave without taking home some fresh fruit & veg. I got a hold of some avocados to have with my chorizo, some beans for my salmon and a few other fruits for my dessert.

The markets are on every Saturday from 6am to 12pm at the Brisbane Powerhouse; every Wednesday from 10am to 6pm on Queen St in the CBD; on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month at the Manly Harbour; and on the 1st Sunday of every month at Mitchelton.

Let us know of your top picks and finds.

District 1 Opens in Fortitude Valley | Bring on the 3 am Pho

Location: Fortitude Valley

Meal: Lunch/Dinner

Pricing: $5- $25

Food: 9.5/10

Service: 10/10

Inspired by Ho Chi Minh City, District 1 has chosen to set up shop in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley.

Owner Philip Pham has created a concept that is buzzing and alive, taking traditional Vietnamese dishes and adding a modern twist to the menu. The humble cafe has Banh Mi and traditional Pho but also offers sweet potato fries as a side (which were definitely my favorite).

We tried out the Lemongrass Beef Banh Mi and the Beef Pho for lunch. The Banh Mi was filled with full flavored, succulent meat and the Pho was warming with whole flavors. The dishes on offer are reasonably priced and satisfy those hunger cravings. The best part about their entire concept is that they are open until 3 am on weekends. Yes, 3 am! Say goodbye to greasy pizza and unappetizing fast food, post party Banh Mi and Pho is the new way to go. I must say, we definitely needed something like this in Brisbane.
