Indian with a twist of Mexican | Indimex

Location: Stones Corner Village, Greenslopes

Meal: Dinner

Cost: $2.95 – $34.95

When you are craving Mexican, but you also want Indian. Porque no los dos? Indian and Mexican, both very different kinds of cuisine; Both are quite distinct and bold in their own right. You know what? I like it. As interesting as it sounds, it’s a fusion of flavours; bold, exciting flavours. As the name suggests, Indimex  offers a culinary mix of North Indian and Mexican dishes. Don’t fret though, if you aren’t up for something adventurous, you can still order traditional Indian or Mexican Cuisine.  Their entire menu is priced under $35 which is perfect for family dinners. Order a few main dishes and some naan to share.

What we ordered:

To start – The Three Amigos ($12.95)

To ignite our taste buds, we started off with a married friendship of dips and corn chips. As the name suggests, a combination of the two cuisines offering Mexican Salsa, Seasoned Guacamole and Daal Makhani (lentils). It was a perfect way to start the night whilst we waited for our main meals. The serving size was generous, and would be best for 2 to 3 people.

20160531_162713

Mains – Tikka Masala with Paneer (Cottage Cheese) ($15.95)

The first main dish we ordered was the Tikka Masala with Paneer. Served with Sauteed capsicum, onions and paneer in a creamy tomato sauce, this dish makes for the perfect vegetarian dinner. It was substantial, delicious, flavoursome, colourful and reasonably priced too. The best way to eat Indian/Mexican food is to order a few dishes and share them.

Saagwala ($16.95)

The second dish to share, was saagwala, a curry made from spinach and cooked on slow heat to retain the flavours. We ordered it with chicken which was perfectly cooked.

Sides – Cheese & Spinach Naan ($4.50) and Coconut Rice

20160531_170146

Alot of people seem to play it safe when it comes to the side dishes. I would recommend adding a serious of dose extra flavour which is why we chose the cheese and spinach naan. Everyone knows we love cheese, but this cheesy filled naan was the real deal. It was amazing. A huge serving for naan which could have easily been shared between 3 people, and only $4.50. Don’t mind if I do.

So, you have decided to take the kids out for a day in the city over the school holidays; at this point you have already circled GOMA a few times, lunch hour is quickly approaching and the hangry-ness (that is a word, in my world), starts to kick in. Why not take the little rugrats to Cowch for a little trip behind the scenes of their favourite DIY dessert venue, creating their own smoothie and naked pop! They will leave with happy bellies and enough energy to swim laps at the lagoon, before you head home, where they will be ready to wind down and head to bed. Sounds like a win win situation to me.

Dominoes who? Crust Pizza delivers the goods

Location: Crust Pizza, Victoria Point

Meal: Lunch/Dinner

Service: 10/10

Food: 9/10

Pizza is literally life. One meal with all your carbs, protein and dairy in a single serving, life is good. Don’t get me wrong I do love a good greasy, Dominoes pizza on a Tuesday but if you are looking for something a little more gourmet, Crust sure as hell delivers the goods. Their newest store in Victoria Point welcomed us with open arms and put forward a spread that was to die for! I honestly had no space to finish it all, and had to go and watch a movie after cos I was too full to drive.

So what makes Crust different to your local pizza joint? Well, they now have a range of healthier bases (spelt & wholemeal) catering for the more fit freaks. So really, your weekly cheat meal isn’t quite a cheat meal, it is actually good for you. They also make everything in store using a paddock to plate concept with all their lamb and beef dishes; so you know the food you are getting is fresh and not last weeks mass purchased, pre-made obesity. Oh, and the best part about their new Viccy Point store is that they have wine, and we all know  how much I love a nice glass of red with my pizza.

With a higher price point than most fast food outlets, one may be steered away from Crust but I assure you the quality of their produce and the passion from their franchise owners is relayed across in the final product. It is simply amazing. I tried out their popular Mediterranean Lamb ($21) with house cooked Lamb roasted in Mediterranean spices, Tomatoes, Green Capsicum, Spanish Onions, Feta & Oregano on a Garlic Infused base, garnished with Mint Yoghurt & Lemon wedge. Serious legit-ness (yes, that is now a word according to me). The lamb was cooked perfectly and well flavoured; the veg and toppings were fresh and complimented the protein. So freaking good; and their pizzas aren’t half shrunken, so you know you are getting actual value for your money.

I also tried out the White Prosciutto Pizza ($24) which was equally as delicious. Sliced Roasted Potatoes, Thinly Sliced Prosciutto, Gorgonzola & Fresh Rosemary on a Béchamel base; unfortunately this bad boy is not available on a gluten free base but hey, yolo just eat the damn thing, it is delicious. The quality of the prosciutto stood out to me! I could not finish the second pizza, but luckily you can take them home and have it the next day (everyone knows pizza tastes better the next day when you are too lazy to make food).

At this point I was already half way to rolling home and could not fit in their amazing dessert pizzas. I have previously tried them out and  a review can be found here.

If you live in the Redlands, or happen to be passing by, be sure to pay Saleem and his friendly team at the Victoria Point store.

Sunnybank’s first venue serving Craft Beers & Cocktails | Southside Bistro

Location: Sunnybank

At least, 60% of our feed on Instagram is made up of food from Sunnybank, and you know what, I wouldn’t have it any other way. As a resident of the area, I am proud to rep my hood; cheap Asian eats, misspelled menus, dodgy parking, rice burner cars, the whole thing. But Sunnybank is changing, and if you ask me, over the next 6 months it will transform into a foodie destination.

South Side Bistro has opened up in the Bank with a different approach to things. Firstly the menu is out of this world amazing, with offerings like escargot, a sizzling brownie (and hell it sizzles), bao pork belly burgers and a deep fried matcha ice cream bao (my new favourite). But it’s not just the menu alone that makes the venue, the whole atmosphere is unlike any other place in the area; it is relaxed and clean cut, it almost reminds me of a lobby café in New Farm. I could literally spend the whole day there; and now you can. Things are changing up, and they have officially got their liquor license (as of today), making them the first Sunnybank venue supplying craft beers. If you live on the South Side you would realise what a huge deal this is. We no longer have to drive for over half an hour for Sunday sessions when we can have it right in our back yard. Alcohol can be served from open (9:30 am) until they close at 12pm. Yes, I am just a bit excited!

Oh and here’s another spin to the story, they are pet friendly too. So why not bring ya pooch along?

Chilled vibes at The Brunswick Hotel

The Brunswick Hotel has changed things up a bit with the upgrade of their Beer Garden and a greater focus on the food. And don’t we all just love food. They have also moved away from the focus on larger beer brands and have embraced craft beers which are trending in Brisbane at the moment. Could this be the next ‘it’ spot for your Sunday sessions? We were invited to a Garden Party at the historic site and were left with nothing short of good compliments for the place. The vibe was chilled, the brews were on point and the food, oh the food.. They have definitely come along way from the traditional pub grub image with canapes like onion tart, seared scallops topped with chorizo and arancini.

Here are some snaps of the delicious share plates on offer:

Breakfast at Little Loco Cafe | New Farm

Location: 121 Merthyr Rd, New Farm QLD 4005

Meal: Breakfast

Price: $4 – $20

Overall Experience: 9/10

Food: 9/10

Service: 9/10

Little Loco Cafe, a cute, humble food destination that has made its’ mark in the Brisbane food scene by providing fresh, healthy and affordable food to the New Farm community. The space is a personal favourite, to a grab a coffee and escape the bustle of the city with my novel. The Brisbane Food Lovers crew took on their breakfast menu and left with happy bellies.

Here are some of the options we tried out:

– Avocado $16 (Avacado Smash, Tomato, Feta, Radish, Lemon & Basil on Sourdough with 2 Free Range Poached Eggs + $4)
If you have previously read some our posts, you would know that we have an absolute obsession with the humble avo on toast. The dish itself is so simple, that is very hard to hide behind. The presentation of the meal was flawless, and the flavours together worked well. For a more filling option I would recommend adding some poached eggs. The only negative I would say, is that the dish is fairy pricey but it tasted amazing so justifiable.
IMG_4286 IMG_4289 DSC03934 (1)
– Coconut Mango Panna Cotta $14.50 (Coconut Panna Cotta, Mango, Loco Granola & Orange Blossom Yoghurt)
The picture perfect Panna Cotta was light and silky paired with crunchy granola; the contrast in textures worked wonders. The yoghurt was a little sour for my liking and could have done with some additional natural sweetener. The mango, even though delicious, lacked practicality and would have better suited the dish if cut more appropriately.
DSC03936 (1)
DSC03936 (1)
– Breakfast Board $20 (Sourdough, 2 Free Range Poached Eggs, Avocado, Spinach, Tomato Relish, Haloumi and Bacon)
One word for this spread, amazing! Simply amazing. As if 2 beautiful poached eggs weren’t enough, they added haloumi and bacon too with avocado, oh my! The tomato relish however, did not work so well as it was more of a sauce. I would recommend an onion jam instead or perhaps eliminate this component all together.
rsz_dsc03938_1
– Nutella Loco Shake $10 (Nutella Milkshake topped with a Gluten Free Donut and Nut Crumb)
Okay so Nutella is probably one of the most overused menu items for 2016; I have to take my hat off to these guys for creating a Nutella inspired menu creation that actually tastes like Nutella. The milkshake itself was delicious, however I wish they had a regular doughnut option in addition to the existing gluten free inclusion.
rsz_1rsz_dsc03929_1
– Greenie Smoothie $9.50 (Spinach, Kale, Apple, Mango, Lime & Coconut Water)
Mmmm $9.50 for a smoothie that’s a bit excessive if you ask me, I would round it off to around $7. But in saying that, it tasted delicious and was packed with natural sweetness. A light, refreshing option in this warmer weather. Perfect for on-the-go chills at New Farm Park.

Sake Tasting Event | Bird’s Nest Restaurant

Bird’s Nest will play host to one of the country’s sake experts Rey Takahashi in an exclusive Sake Tasting Event.
Date: 3rd March
Cost: $49pp
More Information here.
Book here.
Brisbane Food Lovers sent along Myke Moudakis  as a guest blogger to try out the $49 feast.
The review for the 7 sets are below:
1. The sake with green tea was refreshing and light. Crispy lotus root was a beautiful combination.
2. The second sake was still delicious, a little bit stronger, more of a commercial sake taste. The chicken tenderloin was perfectly cooked, sauce was sweet.
3. Ota was super strong and not to my liking, however I feel as though this is traditional sake. The ox tongue… Lets be real. I felt like I was chewing on my own tongue. Ew.
4. The Mahoto again, killed me. I was about to swing from the chandelier. Crispy soft shell crab was done really nicely, not too crispy, not too oily.
5. Tamazakura was a warm sake. Needless to say I was not feeling it. They actually brought out this sake with the ox tongue but got them all mixed up… which kind of defeats the purpose of the whole menu layout. The scallops were one of my favourite dishes of the night. Grilled to perfection and melted away in my mouth. Bacon was crispy but not overpowering.
6. Daichi did have a nice aroma, the taste was less strong, more of a sweeter taste. The server said it was more of a pear taste but I was not picking up on any fruity notes. It was a nice sake that kind of mellowed out the previous sake selections.
7. The Chikusen Plum Wine was my second favourite sake, after the Chuhai. The duck breast with shallots were nicely cooked and slid perfectly off the stick. #BrowniePoints There’s nothing worse than tugging at meat on a stick.
So overall it was a great experience definitely worth $50. The entire place has a great vibe and I’d definitely come back to try out their menu.

Northshore Harbour Cafe | Summer Menu

Location: 297 Macarthur Avenue, Hamilton Reach

Meal: Breakfast / Lunch

Price: $9.50 – $27.50 (Kids menu available)

Overall Experience: 9/10

Food: 8/10

Service: 9/10

ns table

We recently had the pleasure of trying out Northshore Harbour Cafe’s new summer menu. The cafe is located at Hamilton Reach, Northshore. We had never ventured out this way and were pleasantly surprised at the location of this cafe on the river side. Northshore Harbour cafe has a relaxed atmosphere and is the perfect location for a weekend breakfast. They have got you covered with  plenty of (free) parking onsite, we all know theres nothing worse than driving around in circles trying to find a park on an empty stomach!

Now lets get to the important stuff – the food! There were many options on the menu which had us spoiled for choice, however we were already won over with the all day breakfast menu! Here are the dishes we tried:

ns hashcakes

Potato and persian feta hash cakes with smashed peas, poached eggs and herbed hollandaise with bacon. This dish was perfect! The crunchy hash cakes oozing with cheese were complemented fantastically with the herbed hollandaise, the eggs were cooked perfectly and I had to order a side of bacon because, well…. i’m greedy. Initially we got food envy seeing all the other wonderful dishes around us but as soon as we took a bite we knew we had made a good decision!

ns waffles

Now for something a little different… House made waffles and spiced fried duck breast with sriracha maple and thai basil. This was the dish that had us talking – duck, waffles, maple, sriracha? How? We just had to give it a try. This was a very impressive looking meal which  had our tastebuds equally as impressed. The sriracha and maple made a sweet sauce with a spicy hit, the waffles were soft and fluffy and the spices that coated the duck paired with the other components well – the only downside to this dish was that the duck was a little bit chewy and difficult to cut, however it was still a great meal.

ns coffee

Overall we had a lovely experience at the Northshore Harbour cafe and will definitely be back to try out some more of their extensive menu!

Christmas Lunch at the Riverview Hotel | VEGETARIAN

Location: Hamilton, Brisbane

Cost: A La Carte Lunch (5 Course)  – $159

MENU CHOICE: VEGETARIAN

Christmas, a time for family, good food and copious amounts of red wine (in my world anyway). After undergoing a $6 million refurbishment, the Riverviews’ Plates Restaurant will be preparing for their busiest day of the year. With a hybrid menu influenced by the Queensland Summer and Traditional Christmas Dishes, their spread is sure to impress. A little off character for me, but I decided to opt for the Vegetarian Menu.

The Menu Includes:

  • Amuse Bouche
  • Marinated Beetroot with Grilled Goats Cheese and Wild Rocket
  • Christmas Pie with Lentils, Chestnut Potatoes, Mushrooms and Cranberries in a Vegetarian Suet Pastry
  • Pavlova with Fresh Berries, Double Cream and Raspberry Coulis

12362716_706924386110878_1404887969601649717_o

Not only was the marinated beetroot entrée visually pleasant, it was an absolute delight to eat. Light and fresh, but still creamy from the goats cheese. The modern take on the Queensland Christmas.

12362806_706924672777516_7715967994800117755_o

Everything about this dish screamed festive! The light, crisp suet pastry and cranberry sauce were heavenly. I would eat that as a snack alone. Unfortunately my primal instincts didn’t much of a liking to the lentil filling. That was not a result of the flavours of the dish but more so the fact that I had Charlotte eating a rack of lamb beside me.
